Christmas Hope

Twas on a night much like tonight,
Except this night brought forth a Light,
A Light that would shine,
Throughout the world it would shine,
Brightly and unwavering.

It has survived Persecution.
It has survived Famine and Doubt.
It has survived Man's trivial wars.
It has survived Tales of Deceit.
It has survived The Night.

Through this all one thing endured,
A Book of Hope, Joy, Sorrow, Peace, War, and Love.
But it also has something far greater than these still,
This Book has God, written by God through Man.
And God put within this Book the ways to find Him,
He has put the Light into the Book for our Salvation.
And the Light shall take Dominion!

Do not forsake it!

Let's All Hibernate In The Winter

Snow falling,
Gracefully caressing the ground.
All turns white,
With a gluttonous portion of flaky goodness.

Driveways wonder,
Where is its end?
The Sun forgets to warm.
This hemisphere glistens and sparkles,
A marvelous view from above.

The cold, bitter and unforgiving;
Searches for victims in the dark.
A lonely light in the distance,
Longing for another to shine through.

A desolate wasteland;
Finding no green vegetation,
Herbivores hide well;
The Bear goes to sleep.
Why can't we?

Renewable Energy Class Winter Quarter 09-10.

This Winter I am taking several college classes, one of them is a Renewable energy class. I was expecting something like, "These are solar panels and this is how they work and how to wire them." But after my first class Wednesday night, it seems it will be more of a lecture class than actual hands-on work. I don't really mind it too much...I am quite sure, however, that there will be something about Climate Change\Global Warming, and rest assured that I won't score many brownie points with my teacher for my views on that subject. Anyway since it's a class that meets only on Wed. nights once a week, I already got homework. I'm supposed to do some sort of energy efficiency checklist of my house. Things like what kind of furnace or AC do I have or how much insulation is in the attic, do I have thick curtains, thin curtains, or no curtains at all. Do I have mostly floors or carpets...Etc..etc..etc.. I suppose this is just to familiarize myself with noticing the Energy efficiency of household objects or something like that. I did find several things interesting about our first class. firstly, did you know that there are actually 3 types of Solar panels? 1. Solar Electric, the kind most people usually think of when they hear the word. 2. Thermal Solar (Not sure I have the exact term correct) The type that traps air and heats it up from the sun's energy and then shoots it via a fan to heat up your house. 3. Water solar, This takes the heat from the sun and water supplied by you, the water flows around a coil that gets warmed up by the sun and the water then in turn gets warm, which is then sent to your water heater or water storage tank, for use.

(That's all from memory, as I didn't take any notes..I'll try to next class, though.)

Another thing that my teacher, Michael, talked about was how heat circulated through the air. Take a livingroom, for example, with a large picture window as the centerpiece of the room. The window shows a beautiful scenery with a winter wonderland outside. The room is warm and inviting, but someone has left the curtains open. The warm air next to the window, is sucked right through the glass, leaving only cold air behind. This colder air then falls down, because cold air is "heavier" and is always lower than warm air. The cold air hits the floor and travels along the floor until it finds a heatsource, this cold air is then heated again, and begins to rise upwards. This warmer air now travels back to the window where the warmth is again sucked out again, which then causes the air to fall and repeat the cycle once again. This is why insulation and a heavy curtain could be important to keep the warm air inside the house, especially on cold winter nights. Have you ever been lying on the living room floor, or at least gone barefoot around the house, and suddenly you feel a cold draft, but it's only near the floor? This is the cold air flowing along the floor seeking its heatsource...

Michael also talked about the passive solar..An example could be..When you walk by a brick building in the late afternoon or even evening after a hot summer's day, you may feel warmth coming from the bricks. That is because all that day the sun shone on those bricks causing them to heat up, after the sun went down the bricks began to cool, expelling that heat outwards. This can be applied to heating a room or building during the night when there is no sun for normal solar-power means.

Then we got into making power for homes using Solar-electric power. A normal residence can use several panels and batteries to use and store power for heating and running their home's electrical goodies. But what if you want to power several homes, or something larger than that? If you've ever seen the movie "Sahara" then you've already seen a Solar-tower before, there was one built in Spain a few years ago. The "solar chimney" features a large greenhouse covering a large tract of land. As the hot air rises, it would escape up a central tower. Wind turbo-generators mounted in the chimney converts the 50km-an-hour rush of hot air into electricity.

Anyway I'll try to keep you people updated about my most interesting class..

Numbers For Fun!

(Post your answer in the comments.)

What does this number more commonly represent?
43,252,003,274,489,856,000

Google it if you really have to, but just think Quintillion.

(No prize will be given for right answer, you'll just feel smarter, especially if you're the first and\or only one. Of course, if you're the only one to answer the query, then either you're the only one who has spare time for silly trivia or you're the only one who reads this blog.)

Technical Definition of A GFCI Receptacle

As Promised.....Enjoy.

The Following is a basic description of something that is known to be in existence by most people but they don't technically know what it is or does. This is a rough 1st draft, for my Technical Writing Class. It is designed so that people who don't know what a GFCI is, can read this and understand what it is. Please comment and tell if you now know what a GFCI basically is, or tell me if it's hard to understand what I'm trying to say. Any feedback will be helpful for fine tuning it for my class.

Technical Definition of A GFCI Receptacle

A GFCI, Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter, is a device that monitors the flow of electricity or electrons (Same thing), if an abnormality occurs, the device will interrupt and stop the flow of electricity.

A Ground Fault is any electricity that strays off its designated path, and is capable of shocking someone, it's also known as a Short Circuit. An Electrical Circuit is the flow of electricity along a designated path, seeking its way to ground. If someone touches it at any point along the way, that person will be shocked as the electricity searches for a way to get to the earth via your body. That is why you get shocked when you stick a fork into an outlet. The Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter monitors the electron flow, when you stick the fork into the outlet, the flow becomes unbalanced and the GFCI will immediately cut off the power, in less than a couple milliseconds, and keep you from getting any major shock. (You'd probably only feel a very slight buzz in your hand, for a very brief time.)
The GFCI has two coils inside it which detects the electron flow, when the imbalance occurs the coils will expand and push a switch, which is inside the GFCI, causing the circuit to be interrupted, and shutting off the power to any devices down the line.
You may notice that in your house their are outlets that have two little buttons on them, those are GFCI's. The two buttons are mainly used for testing it to see if they are functioning properly, but they also serve as a sign of showing if they have been triggered or "Tripped".
When a GFCI is "Tripped", the Buttons "Pop" out and if you were near by you'd probably be able to hear it. This "Pop" means that a Ground Fault, "Short Circuit", has occurred. To reset a GFCI just push the "Reset button and the power should be restored but if it happens again, you could have a problem with your wiring or the GFCI has gone bad which does happen occasionally.

Getting into the Testing to see if a GFCI is working properly is beyond what this explanation is about, perhaps later I will expand upon this. Thanks for reading this , if you did. Now, I hope you know a little more about GFCI's.

Welcome.

Welcome to R.T.M.M.'s Blog.
Originally (if you're wondering) RTMM stood for Rabbit Trail Mix Man. That is no longer the case.

I will have to warn you though that I do put alot of sarcasm in my everyday speech, not to be (AHEM) rude, but I like to add "flavor" to things, especially because I do not use cuss or vulgar words. Most people don't catch any of it, but some might get hints of it. I also tend to be a literalist, as in people asking "What's up?" (Now a common greeting) and my answer, "The Sky." It is true that the sky is up but I don't think that that was the expected response for some reason. It's OK if you don't "get it", I understand (perhaps).
I also like using the inermediatory words, like my 2 favorites: Perhaps and Maybe.
You may also notice that I like adding alot of suffixes to words already having enough of them.
You also may see (in time) that I ,for the most part use perfect grammar, but tend to ignore it in some cases, mostly in cases of lazinesses.
I hope that this blog will entertain you and hopefully not creep you out to the point of not wanting to meet or be friend with me any longer. Enjoy.
